Kindergarten and Pre-School
The ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School is located in a suite of beautiful classrooms with a welcoming, safe, and well-equipped play area, all located in a secluded part of the school. The ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School provides a wonderful introduction to learning and socialization within a warm and friendly international environment. In the ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School, we aim to stimulate a healthy, eager and happy attitude toward future learning among our students.
We offer two levels, Kindergarten (KG) for students who are 3-4 years of age and Pre-School (PS) for students who are 4-5 years of age.
There are no academic requirements for acceptance into Kindergarten, although students for Kindergarten must turn 3 and students for Pre-School must turn 4 by June 30th in the year they will enter. They must also be able to speak and follow simple instructions as well as be toilet trained.
Each class has a dedicated teacher and an assistant. Each class also has a German teacher who visits once per day for the German lesson.
The ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School offers a very rich environment that generates student excitement and curiosity for future learning and provides a wonderful foundation for Primary School.
The Kindergarten and Pre-School Day
The ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School offers a full-day program beginning at 8:20 and ending at 15:05 (Kindergarten) and 15:20 (Pre-School). During the school day, Kindergarten and Pre-School students are engaged in a multitude of activities. They have two 15-20 minute breaks each day with a small snack and drink provided by the school. In addition, there is a 45-minute lunch period during which the students have time to eat and then play.
Following the lunch period, children have "quiet time" during which they can take a nap.
Settling in Period for New Students
For the first three days a parent must stay with the child to help them settle into their new environment. Children stay for half a day and then move on to a full day when they are ready.
ISF offers extended day care for Kindergarten and Pre-School students both prior to and following the school day. Adult supervision of students is provided in the morning from 8:00 until the start of the school day at 8:20 and from dismissal of the academic day at 15:05 (Kindergarten) or 15:20 (Pre-School) until 18:00. In the afternoon, students may also participate in a variety of other organized activities.
Foundation for Academic Achievement
The ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School prepares each child for a formal school setting by introducing basic concepts upon which their future learning is built. Reading, phonics, language, mathematics, and German form the basis of the ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School curriculum. Children also enjoy art, music, and P.E. as well as circle time each morning.
The foundation for language development is a central focus of the ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School. A reading program is used to aid students in gaining fluency and confidence in reading. The SABIS® Phonics and Handwriting program is used to teach students letter shape and formation and sound recognition. The language program expands students’ ability to communicate thoughts and feelings through theme work, as well as encouraging them to contribute actively to class discussion. Songs, stories, and pictures are used to help stimulate imagination and spark curiosity.
Mathematics is a second focus in the ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School curriculum. Students learn number value and formation as well as shapes, sets, and classification along with number order and ranking. Students’ excitement in applying their mathematical skills comes as they learn to do simple addition and subtraction.
Language instruction in German either as a foreign language or as a native tongue completes the main focus of the ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School curriculum. Reinforcing what is taught in English and math, the German curriculum teaches colors, numbers, letters, and sounds. Celebrating our local culture, the ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School German program also incorporates traditional songs, rhymes, games, and festivals.
Almost all ISF Kindergarten and Pre-School students remain in the school and join our Grade 1 classes and many stay with ISF for their whole school careers. We hope that you will visit our Kindergarten and Pre-School and let us show your child the joys of learning.
