SABIS Student Life Organization® – the Heart of the School

SLO® History

In the early 1950s, Mr. Ralph Bistany, one of the SABIS® co-founders, was intrigued by a student referee during a school football game.  Mr. Bistany was captivated by how all the players followed the referee’s instructions and never questioned his decisions, even though he was one of them — a fellow student and not a teacher. This observation planted the seed of what would become the SABIS Student Life Organization® (SLO®), a student-led society that empowers students to hold responsibility for many aspects of school life.

The Power of the SABIS Student Life Organization®

Today, the SABIS Student Life Organization® is a society that is run by students for students, involving them in the day-to-day running of the school and creating a positive school culture

SLO® is comprised of eight distinct departments fully run by students. Around the globe, students in every SABIS® Network school, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, are encouraged to join SLO® and take an active role in the many aspects of life at school, both academic and non-academic.

While providing opportunities for emotional, social, and moral growth, SLO® helps students develop their academic, managerial, organizational, and leadership skills in a variety of academic and non-academic activities. These include peer tutoring, planning athletic activities and social events, organizing community service projects, and being involved in the school newspaper and SLO® Yearbook.

Through the SABIS Student Life Organization®, students learn to:

  • Promote high social, ethical, and moral values
  • Become active and constructive members of a community
  • Develop academic, managerial, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Acquire and refine the attitudes that give them an edge in college and throughout life
  • Form circles of lasting friendship
  • Get involved in a variety of student-led activities

The SABIS Student Life Organization® at ISF

The SABIS Student Life Organization® at ISF is an important part of every classroom.

Teams comprised of Class Prefects and Group Leaders provide immediate help to their classmates within each class.

Virtually every student in ISF from Kindergarten to Grade 12 is involved in SLO® in one way or another in one of the eight departments.

The SLO® Academic Department in ISF arranges academic support for students. This support takes on many different forms:   Student prefects arrange weekly study groups and peer tutoring. The department also encouragse students to become Shadow Teachers®, students who work ahead in the syllabus and then teach their peers for either part of a lesson or for the entire period under the supervision of the teacher.  Power Study Sessions are also arranged by our students.  In these sessions, expert students offer assistance to those in need of help. Power Study Sessions are offered each term before final exams.

The SLO® Discipline Department at ISF runs campaigns, including an anti-bullying campaign, where videos are produced by our students and shown to the whole school and staff. Students also organize health, anti-smoking and respect campaigns which focus on all forms of respect --  intercultural, gender, inclusion, and age.

The SLO® Management Department is involved in managing all data associated with the SLO® Office. One of the students' major projects is the production of the annual SLO® Yearbook. This department also publishes an informative and entertaining monthly school newspaper.

The SLO® Sports and Health Department includes healthy lifestyle promotion among our students. This department arranges all staff versus student sports matches, intramurals sports for our students, as well as sporting events such as sports and health day and our annual Run-a-thon. This is a major charity event organized by our students and features members of the ISF community running laps around the school track to raise money for a nominated charity.

The SLO® Activities Department runs the daily activities offered during the SLO® Period each day.   During the SLO® Period, a myriad of activities is offered including arts and crafts, dance, drama, music ensembles, choirs, private music lessons, chess, science and computer clubs and much more. The SLO® Activities Department also organizes several special school events including dances, lock-ins, movie nights, and visits to amusement parks.

The SLO® Outreach Department ensures that both new and returning students are fully integrated into ISF. This department arranges ambassadors for all new students and plans monthly themed spirit days. The SLO® Outreach Department also runs special campaigns such a "Random Acts of Kindness Month."

The SLO® Social Responsibility Department at ISF has been involved in a variety of charitable events such as Earth Day and Environment Week, and organizes fundraisers for local charities. The students have also responded to international crises and provide support to the school's main charity, the ISF Kenya Project.

The SLO® Lower School Department is specifically for Primary School students.  SLO® prefects in the Middle and High School organize fun events, such as Halloween parties, Christmas parties, ice skating, and visits to the zoo for the students in the Primary School. The SLO® Lower School Department runs daily activities for younger students and arranges special activities such as the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The department also organizes writing competitions and art displays for this age group.

Benefits for the School and Students

Involvement in all aspects of life at ISF allows students to become fully engaged in the life of the school and gives students the opportunity to contribute to the ethos and culture of the school.

Through SLO®, ISF students acquire and refine skills, attitudes, and attributes that give them a huge advantage in university and beyond.  Leading universities from around the world are eager to attract and accept ISF gradautes, who have acquired such a broad range of such abilities and experiences through SLO®.
